ISO 14443 TYPEA Patent Specification
ISO/IEC 14443defines the physical characteristics of proximity cards (PICCs), the fields to be provided for power and bi-directional communication between proximity coupling devices (PCDs) and proximity cards or objects (PICCs).It describes the polling for proximity cards or objects (PICCs) entering the field of a proximity coupling device (PCD), the byte format, the frames and timing used during the initial phase of communication between PCDs and PICCs; it specifies a half-duplex block transmission protocol featuring the special needs of a contactless environment and defines the activation and deactivation sequence of the protocol. That is applicable to Type A and of Type B either.
We here by make this statement regarding the patent issue of ISO 14443 TYPE A Standard products as follows:
The core patents involved in ISO 14443 TYPE A Standard have all expired their terms of patent protection.
By searching in the European Patent Office on patent families and their legal status, ISO 14443 TYPE A Standard mainly involves two core patents, namely EP047369 (Contactless, inductive data transmission system) and EP0669591 (System for contactless data transmission). The two graphs hereinafter indicate the territoriality and validity period of each patent.

As indicated by Graph 1, the technology involved in this patent is majorly used for IC cards, and its validity period of patent protection expired on August 23, 2011.

As indicated by Graph 2, the technology involved in this patent is majorly used for card reader chips, and its validity period of patent protection expired on February 3, 2015.
In above, the core patents which comply with the requirement of ISO14443 TYPE A Standard have both expired the validity terms of patent protection. Therefore, it is unnecessary to obtain patent grant or licensing for the chip products we have produced which comply with ISO14443 TYPE A Standard.
